The race was named after India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who witnessed the inaugural race in 1952. Apart from being a grand celebration, the race is a commemoration of Kerala’s maritime heritage. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is a must-see spectacle where visitors get to witness a fine melange of teamwork and tradition that is backed by the unwavering spirit of the Keralite people.
2. Champakulam Moolam Boat Race
The Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is one of the oldest and most significant boat races in Kerala.
It is organized during the Malayalam month of Mithunam (June-July) and heralds the beginning of Kerala’s boat race season. The race draws its interest from the legends surrounding it and commemorates the establishment of the idol of Lord Krishna at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple.
The scenic Champakulam River provides a picturesque setting for this cultural extravaganza. The boats are decorated and they glide through the waters in the midst of some enthusiastic cheering by interested spectators. The festival blends spirituality, history, and adrenaline-pumping action in a harmonious orchestra of grand celebration.
3. Ambalappuzha Arattu Festival

This grand event is celebrated in March-April. The highlight of the festival is the ceremonial procession where the idol of Lord Krishna is carried to a nearby temple pond for a ritual bath (arattu).

Held at the Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, about 20 kilometers from Alleppey, the Chettikulangara Bharani Festival is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March). The festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy and is renowned for its spectacular display of creativity and devotion.
The centerpiece of the celebration is the kettukazhcha, where massive effigies resembling temple chariots and decorated sculptures are paraded to the temple.

5. Onam
