The first thing I noticed about mornings in Alleppey wasn’t the sea or the palms—it was the birdsong. From my balcony at Akoya Beach Villa, the air itself seemed alive with the flapping sounds of wings, bird calls, and rustling melodies. For a birdwatcher and photographer like me, it felt as though I had woken into a dream where nature’s avian inhabitants perform just for those willing to sit still and listen.
A short trip from Akoya Beach Villa brought me to Pathiramanal Island, a little green jewel floating on Vembanad Lake. Its name means “sands of the night,” and stepping onto it felt like walking into a secret aviary. Here, the trees seemed to hum with wings: Little Cormorants, Whiskered Terns, Egret colonies, and migratory Northern Pintails all finding their refuge in this 10-hectare paradise. I wandered beneath the canopy, the calls of unfamiliar species echoing through the foliage, while the lake rippled in a glassy shimmer. It was one of those rare places where every step, every glance, carried the thrill of discovery—pure poetry for any birdwatcher’s heart.
I then proceeded to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, just an hour’s drive away. If Pathiramanal is a private stage for birds, then Kumarakom is the grand opera. Here, I watched Purple Herons stalk their prey, darters spear through the water like arrows, and had a rare glimpse of openbill storks feeding in the shallows. The sanctuary felt like stepping into another dimension, one where humans are mere guests and the true residents walk on stilts or soar with effortless grace.
I also learned that Alleppey’s position along the Central Asian Flyway qualifies it to be a haven for migratory birds. Every winter, birds arrive from foreign lands and stay here in Pathiramanal and Kumarakom through the winter before flying to other lands. I found myself spellbound by the sudden arrival of whimbrels, teals, and sandpipers, visitors from distant shores pausing here to rest and refuel. Their journeys stretch across continents, yet here they were—posing perfectly for my lens as though Alleppey was their chosen sanctuary.
I spent one afternoon exploring the backwaters by canoe, camera balanced on my lap. The quiet ripples carried me into narrow canals where cormorants dried their wings like monks in meditation, and egrets glided low over the surface, their reflections doubling their grace. The light filtering through the palms created silhouettes worthy of an artist’s brush. At one bend, a Brahminy Kite soared above, its chestnut wings glowing like embers against the blue sky. I held my breath until it disappeared beyond the horizon, the click of my shutter my only witness.
In Pathiramanal and Kumarakon, a whole new world reveals itself: a sunbird sipping nectar from a hibiscus, a lapwing calling across the paddy fields, and the sudden, thrilling flutter of wings overhead as a flock of bee-eaters paints the sky with emerald strokes.
For a comfortable stay, I would recommend Akoya Beach Villa, right on the beach, where every dawn offers a new story, every dusk a new chorus. By the time I left, my brain was overflowing, but more than that, my heart was full with the joy of seeing my avian friends in flight, freedom their goal, their fleeting beauty captured in the clicks of my camera, to take back home as treasures to be cherished forever.
