The Karumadi Kuttan statue is one of the ancient statues of Kerala. It is approximately three feet tall. It is a carving of a seated figure believed to be Lord Buddha. Notably, the statue’s left side is missing, a damage whose cause remains a subject of speculation.
Some theories suggest natural erosion, while others hint at historical conflicts leading to its partial destruction. The statue was floating in a nearby stream when British engineer Sir Robert Bristow sighted it in the 1930s. Following its discovery, the statue was restored and preserved in a protective enclosure. In 1965, the 14th Dalai Lama visited the site and commissioned a pagoda to safeguard this relic, marking another spiritually significant site on the map of Kerala historical landmarks.
Karumadi Kuttan enlightens the tourist on Kerala’s historical embrace of Buddhism.
The statue’s presence indicates the religion’s influence in the region between the 3rd and 14th centuries. Today, the Karumadi Kuttan Statue is placed high on the list of Kerala tourist attractions and attracts pilgrims and tourists alike, especially during Buddha Purnima, when devotees undertake the Karumadi Kuttan pilgrimage to pay homage to the statue.
