in Paradise: Marari Beach, Kerala Tucked away on the Arabian Sea coast in Alappuzha district,
An island on Vembanad Lake, Pathiramanal spans 10 acres in lush, green vegetation that is a microcosm of biodiversity. The name means “Sands of Night” and aptly describes the charm of a moonlit night on this secluded paradise, which is one of the beautiful backwater islands in Kerala.
Famous among nature retreats in Kerala, Pathiramanal is celebrated for its incredible biodiversity. It is blessed with plant life, butterflies, and aquatic flora. Dense green undergrowth, wild orchids, and mangroves dominate the landscape, creating a peaceful environment for wildlife to thrive. Nature lovers cannot leave Pathiramanal behind.
Birds love Pathiramanal. It serves as the perfect habitat for over 90 species of local birds and around 50 species of migratory birds, some traveling thousands of miles from across the globe. Watch in awe as flocks of terns, cormorants, herons, pintail ducks, whistling ducks, and Indian Shags swoop and skim the water’s surface.
During the migratory season, you might spot exotic visitors like the garganey teal, common teal, and gulls from Siberia and Europe. The silence and isolation of the island provide the perfect nesting and feeding ground for these species, making it one of the top spots for birdwatching in Kerala.
The species to watch out for are:
1. Birdwatching
The #1 activity on the island. Pathiramanal is home to a rich variety of resident and migratory birds. Bring your binoculars or camera and keep an eye out for herons, egrets, kingfishers, terns, and pintail ducks. Early morning is the best time to catch them in action.
2. Nature Walks
Escape into a world of dense vegetation, cool shade-filled trails, and natural clearings. The terrain is flat and easy to walk on, making it perfect for a slow, immersive stroll. You’ll pass through groves of wild plants, mangroves, and butterfly-filled pockets.
3. Photography
Pathiramanal offers fantastic subjects for photography:
6. Explore Aquatic Life and Plants
If you’re curious about wetland ecosystems, this is the perfect setting. Look out for small fish, crabs, water lilies, and aquatic plants along the edges of the island. It’s a great educational experience, especially for nature-loving kids.
7. Combine with a Houseboat Cruise
Stop over at Pathiramanal Island while gliding on a backwater houseboat cruise from Alappuzha or Kumarakom. Spend an hour or two exploring the island before continuing your journey through Kerala’s famous backwaters.
The island can only be reached by a boat ride from Muhamma, which is the jetty nearest to the island. Muhamma is a short ride from Alappuzha. You can hire a local canoe, motorboat, or opt for a houseboat cruise that includes a stop at Pathiramanal island.
From Kumarakom, another nearby tourism hub, the Pathiramanal boat ride is around 30–40 minutes. While there are no regular public ferries, tour operators and homestays in the area often help arrange private rides and regard Pathiramanal Island as part of the Kumarakom backwater attractions, including the island on Kumarakom Day Trips.
Pathiramanal Island sightseeing is best enjoyed in the months from November to February, the season when migratory birds land on the island and stay for its pleasantly cool weather. Mornings and late afternoons are the times for birdwatching and photography because of the best soft natural lighting conditions and active bird behavior.
Avoid visiting during the peak monsoon (June to September), as heavy rains can limit access and obscure visibility.
You can combine your visit to Pathiramanal with other scenic stops in the Alleppey–Kumarakom region, all regarded as eco-tourism hubs:
